Black and Hess invested in alpacas last summer because their fleece sells; it’s hypoallergenic, softer than cashmere but warmer than wool, Black said. The school year keeps Black out of the pasture and unable to bond with the animals - a process that improves alpacas’ quality at shows, thereby increasing their value. Colleen Blaurock, a 19-year Spanish teacher at Perry High School, also makes her students a priority during the school year, even at the expense of Bellasano Coffee & Cuisine, 7548 Fredle Drive, Concord Township. That’s why summer gives her such a sense of relief, she said - ” ’cause somebody’s going to get short-changed, and it won’t be school. Mark Fickenscher, a nine-year chemistry teacher at Madison High School and licensed engineer, collects extra cash doing consulting work.
