Autistic children have special needs like a speech therapist for the summer months and learning tools that help them communicate. The only problem is at age 3 the First Steps stop and you have to go into Head start and the therapy goes to 3 times per week for 20 min each time. Therapy Dogs International is a great organization that tests and certifies dogs as therapy dogs. There is also a place on the website for information for people who are interested in setting up visits with therapy dogs. The school there offered summer school for the children with special needs to continue their routine and therapy. You should check out Kip Farmer’s column on this site– he talks about his autistic son now and again, and I know he’s made leaps and bounds in finding resources and ways to take care of his unique, beautiful son.
