hypoallergenic dogs - Dozens take the plunge to raise money for Special Olympics (The Joplin Globe)
Globe/Garry Jeffries Bill Barksdale reacts to the frigid waters of Shoal Creek on Saturday after taking part in the Polar Bear Plunge. Dressed as a princess bride, Stephen Crighton plunged into the cold water of Shoal Creek Saturday to raise money for youths who participate in Special Olympics. Crighton, of Willard, and six of his fellow fraternity brothers from Drury University in Springfield traveled to Joplin to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the Southwest Missouri Chapter of Special Olympics. Some of those in costume included men in hula skirts, another in a penguin outfit, and others in bikini tops or a bumble-bee outfit, and all ran into the cold waters of the creek on the pledge of at least $50 from friends and family members. Robin Anderson, of Neosho, a representative for the Special Olympics, said the organization was holding 12 similar events statewide to raise money to benefit youths with disabilities.
