Fifty years after they were almost eradicated, the bugs, Cimex lectularius , have crept out of a nursery rhyme and into the lives of the affluent and the poor with equal vigour. Mr Massicott, who describes the canine nose as “cutting-edge technology”, has six dogs trained to sniff out bugs and able to discriminate between live bugs and their eggs and mere bug droppings. Mr Massicott is based in Connecticut and roams as far away as California in responding to fears of infestations in hotels and homes. A series of city bedbug seminars this year began by turning dozens away from a meeting of more than 150 Upper Manhattan residents. A low-cost fix for an infested mattress is to seal it in a hypo-allergenic cover for more than a year, since the bugs can survive 12 months without feeding, but ridding an apartment building of the tiny pests requires repeat treatments and may only drive them into the homes of other residents. read more
