Once again the Westminster Dog Show kept us glued to our TV sets as we watched a magnificent purebred champion strut its stuff at Madison Square Garden and win the most coveted crown of all, âBest In Show. It has me thinking about dogs, and in particular how here in Stonington Village some of our local âdog peopleâ are wondering whyâ”with 161 breeds of dog availableâ”why are âdesigner dogsâ so suddenly popular here? One could say that most pure breedsâ”especially toy breedsâ”are a form of âdesigner dog,â since somewhere in their past they started off as a combination of unrelated strains of purebred dogs. Of course, todayâs designer dogs are not usually bred for a working purpose, the way herders, retrievers, and guard dogs are. They are usually bred just to be companions, just like the toy dogs, except a âSchnoodleâ (Schnauzer x Poodle) or âBoradorâ (Border Collie x Labrador) probably wonât fit easily in your lap.
