hypoallergenic dogs - Before Holiday Shopping and Decorating, Consider Your Family’s Allergies (US News & World Report)

If someone in your family has environmental allergies , potential triggers abound. While stuffed animals might seem risky, since they can be a haven for dust mites, there’s a simple way to keep them safe for your child to play with. Think about conducting a test by visiting a friend or family member who has a pet to make sure your child doesn’t get sick, suggests Martha White, an AAAAI fellow and research director at the Institute for Asthma & Allergy, a private practice in Maryland with offices in Wheaton and Chevy Chase. Spend 30 minutes or more around the pet, then observe the child for the next day or so to see if allergy symptoms develop. If your child has a known allergy to pets, it’s best not to risk bringing an animal into your home, White says. There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, although some breeds, such as poodles and Portuguese water dogs—like the one President Obama’s family chose because of daughter Malia’s allergies— produce less dander .

(hypoallergenic dogs) Most newsworthy dogs of 2009 - The Week Magazine

This guard dog made January headlines after his owner was denied access to the New York subway. Stump the Sussex spaniel, aged 10, was quite literally the underdog this February when — returning from a retirement forced by a mystery illness a few years ago — he unexpectedly won the Westminster Dog Show , the eldest dog ever to do so. In August, owner Cathy James rushed this Australian cattle dog to the vet after noting that Polly was apparently stuck to the door of her fridge . The chihuahua’s status as an accessory in the arms of celebrities like Paris Hilton and in movies like Legally Blonde drove the breed’s popularity to new heights in California, but then fantasy met reality — and news broke in December that the state’s shelters are being overrun by a tiny army of unwanted pets. In December, a Jack Russell terrier named Prima Donna was overwhelming voted the winner of a German reality-TV contest (à la “America’s Got Talent”) for walking on her hind legs, jumping through hoops and chasing her tail. The ASPCA murdered this dog for no reason other than Oreo had served her purpose as a donation magnet and VICTORIA WELLS, THE UNCERTIFIED SOCALLED ANIMAL BEHAVIORIST wasn’t cutting it as far rehabbing this dog.

Bo Obama's First Christmas at the White House - DigitalJournal.com- hypoallergenic dogs

The Obama family’s dog will experience his first Christmas at the White House. Bo, the White House Portuguese Water Dog, will celebrate his first Christmas at the White house with his own Christmas stocking. Bo got into the White House after several months of speculation about the identity and breed of the first family dog. The White House search for the dog breed became a bit complicated because of Malia Obama’s allergy which required a pet dog of hypoallergenic breed. Bo was given as a gift to the first family by the late Senator Edward Kennedy who also owns a Portuguese Water Dog.
