hypoallergenic dogs - Hillsborough pet lover grooms furry friends - Scarlet Scuttlebutt

HILLSBOROUGH — The animals she grooms might not be actually attending a Hollywood awards show, but Beth Recchia hopes to at least make them look red-carpet worthy. Recchia, 25, a township native and self-described animal lover, had wanted to work with animals ever since she graduated Hillsborough High School in 2001. She went on to attend and receive her pet-grooming diploma from the North Jersey Dog Grooming Institute in Chatham, worked as a pet groomer in Flemington for three years, and was later hired back at the Grooming Institute as an instructor. In April 2006, she opened Furry Tails pet grooming salon, where she also instructs those wanting to learn how to groom animals. Beth Recchia of Manville is owner of Furry Tails Pet Grooming Services in Hillsborough.

Dog lovers also need to be smart about the breed they choose and be willing to make adjustments. A Portuguese water dog, reportedly the breed the Obamas have settled on, can go for $2,000 or more. It’s a foster program, and (if the dog doesn’t work out) you come back and choose another. And keep the house clean, including filters on the furnace, "all the things they’re probably already doing because they’re an allergic person," Whittle says. Crystal Buchanan, clinical coordinator with Central Maine Bariatric Surgery, has earned national certification in her nursing specialty. The program, which is open to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, will explore how it’s possible to transform reactions, improve health and embrace peacefulness while under pressure.

Have You Tripped Over Your Dog? - New York Times- Topic: hypoallergenic dogs

A new study shows that more than 86,000 people a year end up in the emergency room because they tripped over the family pet . Judy Stevens, whose research focuses on preventing falls in senior citizens, said she’s often heard people explain that they were tripped up by the family pet, but until now there were no data to show how common a problem it really is. On the street, the only time I’ve ever fallen with/over them was when crossing Central Park West, a woman walking a slightly aggressive dog, talking on her phone (not paying attention to me, my dogs, or the traffic) ran up behind me. I do wonder about the flip side of the question, because I have a neighbor whose dog died after being stepped on and have stepped on my own dog’s paws countless times– how many pet injuries occur due to being stepped/tripped on? I’ve tripped over my dog several times, usually while getting into or out of bed in the dark, but there’s never been a serious injury to either of us. I’ve never tripped over one of my dogs, but I’ve tripped over a cat many times.
