Grant Foreman Elementary students Levi Sandersfield, left, Darnell Hinson, and Devin Hillman cast ballots for the presidential dog. Obama announced that he has narrowed his search down to two non-shedding breeds, the Labradoodle and the Portuguese water dog. Hannah Plumlee said she liked the picture of the Portuguese water dog because she liked black and white dogs. They are considered good with children, but, though hypoallergenic, could produce allergic reactions in some people, according to the Portuguese Water Dog Club Web site. The Obamas are searching for a “hypoallergenic” dog, due to the fact that his 10-year-old daughter, Malia, suffers from pet allergies. A common misconception is that the pup’s fur is the root of pet allergies, but experts say the issue has little to do with the length or amount of hair on the pet. It’s actually dog dander, or skin particles, that causes the sneezing, wheezing, itchy eyes and runny noses, according to Jennifer Vanderau, director of communications at Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. Breeds like collies, German shepherds, greyhounds and whippets tend to shed a lot, he said, whereas “a bichon frise or poodle or Lhasa apso or shih tzu — they don’t shed so they don’t produce the allergies.

According to the PCA’s “Report to the Media on Poodle Rescue,” “Labradoodles were first produced in Australia in 1989 through an experimental breeding program sponsored by the Royal Guide Dog Association. The Association believed that by crossing the steady temperament of the Lab with the Standard Poodle, with its low shedding coat, a solution for this small population of people would be found. Upon analysis of the breeding program however, it was found that fewer than 35% of the labradoodles produced were acceptable as guide dogs and an even lower percentage were found to be ‘hypoallergenic. Should the Obamas decide on the Portuguese Water Dog (PWD) as their choice for first pet, both clubs agree that the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America ( www. Poodle Club of America - The Poodle Club of America (PCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of the Poodle.

When I was first looking into dog adoption, finding a dog which would not make me sneeze all year around was a significant factor in my choice. Sure, I wanted something small and cute which could come with me to work every day, a dog not too large as to make the bed shake when jumping on the bed, but not so small that I’d trip over it. A hypoallergenic dog breed is alleged to be safer for allergic persons than other breeds, although allergists recognize that a particular allergy patient may be allergic to one dog and not to another. Interestingly, some vets suggest a dog’s size is a factor in how "hypoallergenic" a dog may be, simply because the entire surface area of the dog is smaller, and therefore has less dander to float around.
