Service Dogs for the handicapped wear many hats, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Ear Dogs for the Deaf, and Wheelchair Aide and Brace-Balance Dogs for those people who have difficulty walking or who cannot walk at all. Wheelchair Aide Dogs can help to pull manual wheelchairs up ramps, over door sills and over uneven surfaces, they can steady the chair to keep it from tipping over, or, conversely brace the chair’s occupant so that they can transfer from bed to chair, from the chair into a car or back again, or they can help their person manage personal care when facilities are inadequately equipped or not equipped at all for a handicapped person’s use. Seizure Alert Dogs warn of impending seizures, get their person to sit or lie down, lie close to them during the seizures and help to reorient their person coming out of the seizure. Wheelchair Aide Dogs for manual wheelchairs, and Brace-balance Dogs are generally from the same group although some Great Danes have been used in brace-balance work for tall people. The San Francisco SPCA uses rescued dogs for hearing ear work, and they use a lot of terriers for this work, many miniature and toy poodles are excellent hearing ear dogs. Search and Rescue Dogs, Earthquake Dogs, Avalanche Dogs, and Cadaver Dogs, (those who search for drowning victims and other dead bodies) are also considered Service Dogs, and a group of people are currently working to develop Diabetic Dogs to alert on suddenly dropping blood sugar in diabetics, which will help people from lapsing into diabetic comas. read more
