13 January 2008: In which I struggle to bond with Lizzie - Daily Mail- Topic: hypoallergenic dogs

Benji is now on special, hypoallergenic bedding, special non-spore feed, and has to stay out in the paddocks as much as possible which is difficult, as Lizzie won’t be separated from him, and she has to be in at night while it’s so cold and wet. I can see now that Benji’s previous owner, on learning he could also no longer be ridden because of a bad back, decided he just wasn’t worth the bother, and ordered him to be put down. On Saturday night, I put her supper by her feet having carefully added her Bach flower remedies for stress, a supplement to help her feet grow strong (she had been abandoned in a rutted field for a year, which caused her hooves to split), and another to help her manage her hormones rubbed her on her shoulder and turned away. And then, on Monday morning, I was conducting my daily “sweep” of all the cats I run my hands gently over their bodies, feeling for any sore bits, or for anything unusual when I noticed a hard little lump on Snoopy’s right paw. It didn’t seem to be causing him any pain, and he seemed completely fine in every other way (he wasn’t doing his teapot impression, which is a sign he is feeling under the weather), but I still stuffed him into a cat basket and drove him to the vet’s. read more

BULL-Y FOR US! (New York Post)- hypoallergenic dogs

After 75 years in the doghouse, the humble bulldog is back on the list of Top 10 favorite breeds, both in Manhattan and in the nation. The stocky sports mascot muscled the miniature schnauzer out of 10th spot on the annual national list, which was released by the American Kennel Club yesterday. Queens breeder Brigitte Gitte Antonocci, 39, of Big City Bulldogs in Astoria, was not surprised by the rise in popularity of the breed, which can vary in price from $800 to $5,000. Comedian Adam Sandler, several Philadelphia Eagles, and actor Clooney all own bulldogs, - and Sandler even devotes a section of his Web site to his canine crony. Gina Lash, 39, the assistant vice president of the American Kennel Club, said Manhattanites are sophisticated dog lovers who set national trends. Manhattanites bucked the national trend by favoring the hypoallergenic Havanese, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel - beloved by Charlotte in "Sex and the City" - the pug, and the French bulldog. read more

Feline Insights Are The Cat's Meow - Tampa Tribune- hypoallergenic dogs

They say dogs are checkers players, while cats play chess; dogs are straightforward, cats, complex; and while dogs are always eager to please, cats are eager to nap. If you are new to cat parenthood or perhaps just curious about your own cat IQ, check out these questions, with expert answers from veterinarian Donna Repeta at The Cat Hospital on Park Street in St. Up to 30 percent of cats have no reaction to catnip, while others seem to go crazy for it. Some cats, especially medium- and long-haired cats, can have difficulty passing them or pass them more frequently than they should. Not all cats will scratch, and we encourage our clients to give their new cat or kitten a chance to be trained to use a scratching post before making the decision to have the surgical procedure. Because it is more challenging to detect a cat’s health problem, owners should place more value on annual visits to the veterinarian. read more
