Earlier advice about restricting certain foods from moms’ and babies’ diets has been tossed out and the only concrete advice remaining is to breast-feed. read more

Recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s most therapeutic robot, Paro is unlike automatons Asimo, Honda’s astronaut look-alike, or even the life-like (though slightly stilted) Repliee Q1 lady android, which seems to bring to mind Chucky the killer doll. Having been tested extensively since it was developed in 1993 and now used in a number of nursing homes in Japan and other countries, Paro has proved successful in improving the psychological (such as relaxation and motivation), physiological (vital signs) and social (instigating communication) aspects of in-patients and caregivers. Among the renowned speakers at the conference were Singapore’s Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, Nobel laureate in economics Professor Robert Merton of the Harvard Business School, and Dr Hiroyuki Murata, Murata Associates Inc founder and an opinion leader on ageing issues in Japan. read more
