It may benefit when training to think of a puppy much like a baby that needs to be raised to grow up properly. It is very important that we teach children to sleep alone and a puppy must learn this also. An important rule in training will be that this is not a place to punish a puppy for bad behavior and it should become a place of safety for them. Required training is necessary, but closing the dog away is not the answer to correcting every bad behavior. Consistency is the key when training and the dog must be able to count on their owner when necessary to learn things quickly. Teaching a younger dog not to eliminate in their bed can only be done if they sleep in them at night. Dogs as a rule do not want to go to the bathroom anywhere that they eat or sleep and this will help them to learn about notifying their owner to eliminate during the night.
The kennel should be furnished with soft blankets suitable for the young dog to create a comfortable sleeping space. The use of towels is also a good idea because these items will be washed frequently in the beginning. Do not place toys and materials in the crate for them to play with when time to go to bed. Telling them goodnight or that it is time to go to sleep each time will reinforce to them the schedule and they will pick it up very quickly.
Training will not give the owner much sleep in the first few months and it may seem there is a baby in the house, but it will improve with time. When the dog indicates discomfort remove them, but take them outside without a lot of attention. In no time at all they will develop the pattern between sleep time and play time.
Consistency and time will pay off on the part of the owner and the young dog will be learning to control their bladder and bowels much more efficiently. In a short time, they may be able to go an entire night without needing to go out if given the chance prior to bed and they can even refrain from soiling their beds. Scolding the dog will only make the situation first and it is important to remember that the responsibility is yours when teaching them to learn control.
Eventually the kennel will become a place that the dog sees as a resting area that is special and it will not be a place of confinement. It can be used to keep them safe during the night and when it is necessary to leave them alone for a couple of hours. Never restrict a puppy to a kennel for more than a couple of hours because it is important that they learn to have their own private space and it becomes a very special place to them all through their lives.
